If you go with a macro lens the canon 100mm L series lens are fantastic!If you are unfamilar with dslr's get a lens with the IS feature its very useful. I shoot alot of my shots with a 17-55, once in awhile i borrow a friends 24-70 F2.8 and that lens is fast! I have a 100mm macro but i wish i had gotten the L lense with the IS macro shots need alot of light and a really steady hand to come out good.
I have never heard the term "over flash" before. But a speed light is a removable flash that you can take off. Not like a on board flash that is already on the camera. Like Nikon sb-900, 800, 600, and the 400 all are speed lights. Nikon has the CLS (Creative Lighting System), I have no idea what Canon or the other brands use.

I love my 70-200 f/4 L because of the versatility. I would have bought the faster one, but it was a ridiculous deal on Amazon a few years back. I think I paid around $400 for it. Not sure if it was mismarked or just a sale, but I snatched it up while I could.
