i will be setting up a new 75g tank once my new center brace comes in, i was wondering what is the best substrate for oscars, the picked up gravel and pebbles and spit them out, move them, all the time, would sand be ok for these guys even though they spit it out all the time, i only want to set this tank up once so any help or experiences would be appreciated thanks

I use a number 2 silica sand and it seems to work very well. He picks a little up here and there but nothing major. Also number 2 silica sand is easy to vac whereas number 1 silica sand is much to fine to vac and will go right up your hose.

does anyone have a pic of the way they set up their oscar tank so i can get some ideas, also would there be any harm in setting up half tank of sand and half of the pebbles or what that just be a waste of time?

I've got sand in all 4 of my Oscar tanks. I worried too much about them swallowing rocks/gravel. The sand is super easy to clean and all that gunk doesn't get stuck down in it like gravel causing extra water quality problems.
There's tons of pictures in the Photo forum to get some ideas. I'm hesitant to post one as its the wrong forum and I'm not sure it's allowed here.

No substrate!!!!! easier to clean.......but i would go with pool fiter sand.

i got a 5 gallon bucket of sand from my buddy who is a sandblaster at a metal fab place and i washed the hell out of it and it seems to be doing great in my oscar tank. the poop and food just sits on top and doesnt get stuck inbetween rocks like in gravel. i havent seen my oscars ever try to eat it. just suck stuff up off of it and spit that out but not the sand itself.
