Best substrate for planted tanks and why

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i use 1 1/2" of flourite and top it off with 2-3 inches of either play sand from home depot or some black crystal quartz sand, has works for me for years. Also very cheap. Everything listed will work though its just what works for you price wise and look wise.

sweet. I was thinking it over today, and after talking to a buddy of mine, i think i'm going to layer a mix of floramax and vermiculite on the bottom, add a layer of just floramax on that, and possibly add some existing gravel depending on the color/depth of said mix. anything will be better for my plants than just the gravel though. i'm excited to see as they have done quite well just using the gravel

cool idea... but for a 30 gal wouldn't it be the same price as buying a bag of ecocomplete?

For 30 gallons, it would probably be very close to the same price. The eco would be easier though, for sure. I was just trying to add to you list of options. If you ever do a bigger tank, this would be a much more attractive option.

For my 125, I spend $5 for two 5 gal buckets of sandy loam at a landscaping place, $13 for a 50lbs bag of turface at another landscaping place, and $10 for some pond fertilizer tabs. I didn't bother with mineralizing the soil. My guess is you will spend around the same amount for you 30 gal tank on the eco.

i do appreciate the info though! and maybe someone that reads this will try it
