Hey Everybody,

Just thinking about future stock list for a 300 Gallon (72inch x 36inch x 27inch)

According to the species list it seems the silver and black aros...will get to large for this tank. And I heard they are probably best tempered. I know it will take a few years, but are members intersted in large aros like in the case of clown loaches. Just curious if I do go the route and was to get an aro probably aroung 6 inches from aquascape, would I be able to not have much of a problem in selling/giving him away?

Sorry if this was confusing, as I just want to have some kind of idea that the aro would be able to not have much of a problem in being rehomed.

Also I was thinking probably 18 inches would be the max size an aro could live in here? Or a few more inches bigger?

Thanks

i am not really sure of what your asking.. A silver or Black arowana will be fine in a 300gal.. it would just depend on the tank mates.. how many others and what types... please be more specific...

You are correct in the assestment of your tank. Even though you have a 300g volume and a good 36" width, the 72" length is just to short a length for a 30" plus arowana. I getting to the point of thinking my 8 foot tank is even to short.

As for growing out an aro, you'd get a couple, three years with a silver. Rehoming a large silver with DE may be difficult though. You'll find plenty of takers but most will not even have a tank as large as yours, find a suitable home will be rather hard. You'll have better luck with a black aro, not as common as a silver and just about zero chance of getting DE. They do grow somewhat slower then silvers and will actually be worth some money when you are looking to rehome. Or possibly in 3-4 years when the time comes you may be able to upgrade to that larger tank.

Inital cost of the black is much more though. My advice is to wait until spring, get 3-5 baby blacks and raise them. Raising a baby black, though challenging, is a very rewarding experience.

As Brian says.

Blacks are, in any case, generally mellower.

Ok thanks a million for all your help. I will look up more on drop eye as I have heard it often in the aro section but have not yet seen it. Thats not such a bad Idea, guessing the black aros are cheaper in the spring?

Thanks I will have to try to size the ray as well as the aro accordingly...maybe get the rays at size of pups and the aro little larger...so hopefully the aro will always be bigger then the rays thru the coarse of thier growth.

Also Red Devil sorry or the confusion..i tend to get off topic easily when writing threads. My plan is to have rays as the bottom dwellers, geos and severums as the middle level and an aro for the top level. According to the threads maybe it will be one or a few small black aros that when they have reached thier max in this tank (20 inch -25inch i would say is comfortable but could be mistaken) they will likely be sold. Unless of coarse I was able to do another upgrade in the future....likely not possible.

blacks and silvers are more of the calmer aros out there I believe.

i agree with the others a black would be your best bet although thay are alot more that grow really slow from what i have seen and you wont really have to worry about it out growing the tank my rule of thumb is as long as the tank is close to 3 times the langth and the fish can turn without ether its nose or tail hitting the glass it will be just fine. i have a jar that is around 20" (haven't put a tape to it) in my 150 breeder 72" x 24" x 20" and he is doing great he is kinda the owner of the tank lol there is also a 18" burcher and a 15" id in the tank

Black and silver aros do a lot better in large tanks with other larger fish such as cichlids, etc. Jars tend to be more aggressive towards other fish and will definitely beat up another arowana in most cases.
It all really depends on the individual tank and how long all the fishes have been raised together.

We've kept larger sized silvers & blacks together with larger "monster fish" with no issues so that is your best bet.

Wish I could start off a baby black aro in my 72 grow out to have them all adjust, but pretty sure it will eat the 1 inch Geos that I have, growing.

Think someone mentioned a good season to buy arowanna? Guessing for price?

I think the spring and fall are the best seasons.
