i want to convert my freshwater tank to sand substrate.
ive used pea greavel ever since and thinking an overhaul. i had sand before in one of my tanks and im pretty sure it was play sand. i didnt like the way it looked when it turned gray and dirty.

any brand of aquarium white sand you guys know of?
and whats the best way to keep it bright white?

thanks!

I use Tahitian moon sand. Keeping it clean is tough, but I run a net through it to take out the larger waste and I try to syphon out the smaller stuff. Works well for me. Good luck.

how do you guys keep it bright white tho?

btw, the free sand from the beach sounds good!

You can get fancy shmancy aquarium sand but I just buy and thoroughly wash some cheap play or pool filter sand :D

any brand you recommend? or the 3M brand is the best?

If you need a lot and cheap that's safe, use play sand from home depot. They cost about $4 for 50lbs. I have been using play sand for 4 years now without any problems. Clean the gravel prior to adding to tank (place in a bucket and rinse repeatedly until rinse water is clear). The gravel is easy to clean once in the tank and looks very natural.
