You'll probably find that the reason that you get such a good effect from the sunlight is more to do with the angle the light is hitting your fish at rather than the type of light. I have gained great effects on fish like Nematobrycon lacortei (rainbow tetra) and melanotaenia praecox (neon rainbowfish) by spotlighting the tank from an angle coming down through the front of the aquarium. (with no light coming from directly above, it washes the subtle sheens out).
