best way to aclimate a stingray?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the drip method is a waste of time if the ray has been in the box for hours you dont want to leave it in the box for another few hours when you drip

the best way is to dump 1-2 pans of water in the box wait 10 mins then take the ray out of the box and into the tank as you dont want to dump the box water in your tank

never had a problem doing it like this

Agreed, never dripped any of my rays. Just removed most of water shipped in to just above the rays back and add water from system. After repeating this twice over 30 minutes I scoop the ray out and add to system. If it were shipped over a longer period I would SHORTEN the acclimation period to get the ray out of the fouled water.

My ray was only in the bag for about 30 min. I did the squirt method and checked the amonia and nitrates while it was aclimating. amonia was 0ppm and nitrates were barly 10ppm. Because of this i decided the water it was in was ok. I was more worried about the temp. which was 5 degrees diffrence and the PH which was .6ppm diffrence.

Where were u guys before i put him in?hahaha anyways. its fine now.

I do exactly that. Open the bin/box put a cup or two or water from my tank let the ray sit for about 30 minutes to an hour tops and put em in the tank, never failed me.

Drip doesn't get rid of the ammonia spike that happens when the bag is opened and the oxygen gets in the bag.... I alaways do the squirt and dump method

Ment to ask this back when the thread first started...so the ammonia spikes when oxygen gets into the opened bag? What happens with ammonia levels when a ray is transported (for several hours) in a large rubbermaid container with an air stone? In the past, whenever I moved, I always placed rays and fish in a clean 30 gal trash can with no stone. They would sit for hours during the move and while the tank was being set back up (were not large rays at the time either). Never had any problems...comments?

What I do with wild rays along with wild discus is to let the bag/s float for 30 minutes or so in which I remove the bags from the tank cut open the bag and dump the fish into a net. Then they go into the tank. Never have had one problem. No casualties either
