best way to change gravel?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For the bigger gravel get a bigger tube. If your using the pythons1/2" its not gonna work. I have an 1 1/4 and thatll do the trick for even the bigger sizes of gravel.

Scoop it out with a net??? I hope you have a few of those handy, because you'll tear them up! I have several colanders just for this job. I like the screen type the best. Ones with a metal frame around them.
Just drain about half the water and start scooping and put into a bucket. The water stays put. You'll have to drain the rest of the water when your done because it will be nasty as can be but you will be able to clean the gravel a bit by leaving some of the water in there while taking it out.

I take the fish out too. Put them in a bucket or something while you work.

Oh,,, I also save as much of the original water (pre-gravel removal) as possible. That will give you a little more BB boost. It's already going to be quite the shocker but hopefully your filters will still be good and the original water will help out. So move fast & don't forget to dechlorinate when refilling!!!

Good luck.

if you have a siphon, remove the head so you only have the actual tube. The suction will be strong enough to pick up gravel and shoot it out the other side.

That will not work either. My gravel were 2"-3" in size so the water pressure from the hose will not be strong enough to pull the gravel out even if I was using a 3" hose.

My syphon has a 1 1/2" uplift tube, and even then, its not strong enough to lift up gravel .25" big. Only lifts it up a few inches before it drops again.

That is what it is designed to do. If you want to siphon the gravel out, you need to take the tube off.
