Thinking of using sand in my new tank but never used it before. What the best way to clean it does it not suck up using a syphon?

Well first off do not use play sand. Its worthless and will ruin ur filters its way to light... I have pool filter sand it is heavy enough that if i put the gravel vac thing on the hose i can burry it in the aand and as long as i dont just sit there it wont suck up the sand... And if i take the gravel vac attachment off i can jus run it along the top... U learn how to get close enough to clean but not close enough to sick sand up... Its an acquired talent

I have play sand in all of my tanks. A tiny bit comes up when i use the vac, but its usually no more tgan a teaspoon per water change. What i usually do is skim everything off of the top of tge sand, then stir up tge sand to release the gasses and anything in the sand into the water column, tgen perform a normak water change and let the filter take care of the rest.

+1 use pool filter sand

i did a mix of white pool filter sand and black diamond blasting sand and i think it looks better than just pool filter sand

when ever i do water changes i just skim the top of the sand to get some of the exes poo out i have no problems with sand in my filters

now you need to clean your sand before you put it in your tank
to do this dump the sand in a 5 gallon bucket and run a hose in the bucket until the water runs out of the bucket clear

If your flow and filter is good enough you don't need to vac sand, the waste stays on top unlike gravel, my piranhas are very messy, but my circulator blows 1000gph across the bottom of the tank into the fx5 intake. Never have had to vac my sand, no debris anywhere, love it! Pfs!
