I love the sand in all my tanks. But I paid for the nice stuff and it's been worth every penny so far.

PFS all the way. Never personally used play sand, but I do hear a lot of people talk about how light it is and it getting sucked up during water changes.

For cleaning I just use a hose and hover over the top. My rays sift it well and the poop they put out is very visible and easy to get

The brand won't matter, some are darker shades,or slightly different grain size.I bought a bag from harrows.after that I found a post about quickcrete all purpose sand found in lowes or home depo.now its all I use

I use play sand mixed with crushed coral, and when I vac I skim the top with the plain hose end, no vac attachment, to increase local suction. Once I skim the sand surface, I stop suction and then kind of swish the tube over the sand real quick to disturb the top layer. This frees up more crap which I then just suck right up.
