Best way to clear cloudy water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Overnight "white" cloudiness is a bacteria bloom. Less is more when it comes to additives to the water... I would not add anything to the tank other than, maybe, some prime.

Adding the sponge filter is a good idea not only because it will add lots of oxygenated surface area for "good" bacteria, but it will ensure your tank stays oxygenated when the bloom dies back and decomposes.

As has already been mentioned, take a day or two off of feeding and the cloudiness will go away. This is all a normal part of getting a tank cycled.

A UV filter is the nuclear option.

Personally when I had marineland filters I would not use the cartridge's that came with the filters but would replace with sponges for fluval cut to fit the compartments this will increase surface area for bio-filtration. I personally don't use carbon on non of my aquariums because I've learned that the smell from your aquarium is an indicator besides test and how your fish are acting if something is wrong.

These kinds of bacterial blooms are part of a new tank breaking in.
You don't need a UV, you don't need to do anything except have patience.
Especially since at 2 weeks, it is not even cycled yet.

To answer you question a UV is not a big deal to set up. You only need to size it to your system plumb a power head or pump to it or you may find an in tank one that has its own pump.
As far as it being a nuclear option it's not that serious. You may or may not need one but I have had experience with blooms that just will not go away with out a UV.
They have their place and can be a very useful tool, nothing to be afraid of.

sunsun uv is plug and play but rem to remove the plastic from the UV tube before you put in the tank

A UV filter is an expensive fix for a problem that SHOULD go away on it's own (for free) with a little patience. Nothing to be afraid of, but also a waste of money if not needed. ;)
