I think it should be the fish owner responsibilty to rehome that fish they purchased or got. I think that's irresponsible to kill something because you don't want to deal with it anymore. Think about tank mates before putting them in the tank.

Wow look how much effort that took. People like you are kinda pathetic, takes a f'n post on here for many others to offer to help you. Shows what a great community this is. A special trip to the store? What a great guy. Idiots like you need to figure out stock and tank size and what you can do before you get all giddy like a 4th grader and buy up everything thats "cool".

I have a convict that can't swim, just lays there at the bottom on its side. it can wriggle and shuffle around and eat too. its partially paralysed and I've kept it for about a month in a breeding trap to see if his symptoms improve. gradually hes moving more but still is completely unable to swim. a real fish keeper does things like that, cares for his stock and tries to save them, not ust euthanise them. as Irishfan stated if youre a fish keeper who makes "special trips" to the LFS then how experienced can you really be? all LFS have a return policy for unwanted fish.

Sorry my post may have been a bit harsh, and to some it might just be fish or animals, but I believe in responsibilty like many others here. You bought it, now figure out what to do with it if you dont want it. I really love animals and am one of those like above who will do what needs to be done t help them out or keep them. Hell I have a tank on the floor of my living room with a fish in it cause he needed some tlc..it looks like crap but he needed to heal and eat some more.

I hope you figure the situation out in a better way than killing it.

Get water from the tank, add a lot of ice and mix it until the water is icy cold. The ice should be melted and your hand should feel numb by putting it in. Take the fish from the tank and drop it there, it will go in shock immediately and die in less than five minutes. I could never find clove oil and I wouldn't want to chop the head halfway through and see the fish flopping around with half his head severed.

The sudden drop in temperature is what kills the fish almost instantaneously, so you wanna make sure the water is already very very cold before dropping it in. Putting it in warm water inside the freezer can take several hours and the fish might still be alive when you check it out, happened to me once. It's because the freezer can't drop the temperature fast enough for the fish to go in shock, so they adapt to the slow change in temperature until they eventually pass away.

Btw LOL, those that got offended by this thread probably left the computer to go feed a live pinky mice to their arowana.

5 min thats too long..just hit it on the head with a priest and its dead in a blink of an eye, no pain.. but not this fish hes found a home

my lfs might not be able to take my adult Jd...and she has nowhere else to go. I really do not want to do this but how should I go about it in the most painless way. If I can get her to the Lfs I will do it, don't get me wrong, but if I have to do it, How should I do it?
:(... one last sidenote...It tried to eat my pictus cat (R.I.P.), and I fear it has a barb in it's throat.

Ozzy,

Where are you in Iowa? I also live in Iowa, and although I don't have the room for your JD there are a lot of great cichlid keepers that would take it from you in Iowa. Try posting something on the classified section of either Midwest Cichlid Assoc. or if you are in the eastern part of the state there is the Quad City fish keepers. I am sure you could find someone that would even come pick it up from you. What ever you do don't kill this cichlid.
