Is it like slime from your fish? They may be stressed or it may be from bodily oils

i think that it is from the silversides that i am feeding the gar and bullhead. i really never had this problem untill recently and the only thin that i changed was went from live to frozen. i have started to rinse them good before i put them in and it seems to be helping.

To remove oily film on top of water - turn off filter, take a sheet of newspaper and lay it on top of water. Once paper is saturated lift if up. Film will adhere to paper. May have to do it a few times before all the film is removed. Remember to turn filter back on.

I've seen skimmers that you can ad to the intake side of your filter, but it seems like a lot of work. How about a spray bar for a water return? You need to keep the surface "broken".

I am surprised this has not come up yet but I always had a moderate biofilm on the surface by the time my weekly water change would come around, never really bothered me much...and this was with the FX6 output agitating the surface. Recently added a powerful airstone (see my thread on this), I used the Eheim diffuser with a deep-water whisper airpump, and have not had even a hint of a sheen on the surface since then.

Hagen makes a cheap little surface skimmer attachment that is pretty effective against surface buildup.
