Ok that's the main method I have been thinking of, does it cost a lot to run?

i never figured out how much but I'm on fixed electric plan so it's the same every month. The controller is key so all heaters click on and off together. I have it set so if it drops 1 degree, the heaters kick on. So they don't run long at all. Initial start up will take a while to get to temp. I think it took me a week.

When I first got into this hobby the trend was to heat the room and keep the tanks temp and room temp pretty close together. Most of the LFS were set up this way as well. I still prefer to do it this way and have a heater in the sump but it rarely gets much use.

Lots of insulation, a sealed lid, and a pump that generates a lot of heat (Ex. Sump pump from hardware store) will greatly lessen the amount of heaters you need.
