Best way to heat a 1000gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know it's probably not the best method, but I'm running 6 250-300 watt heaters with a temp controller. I keep it at 79-81 and according to the kil'owatt thing I have it costs about 25 a month to heat. My tank is also about 1000g.

Depending on how you want to do it. You could use hot water through pipes under your tank. Maybe try to make a closed loop system off your hot water heater.

Not a bad idea really. Radiant heat works well for a lot of applications.

Heating with your home hot water heater is only cost effective if you have gas. If you heat the water tank with electric heating the tank or sump directly makes more sense. I am building a 700 that will be plumbed into the hot water tank. It will pay for itself in a little over a year. The bonus is, you never have a heater go bad again.

A huge potential problem I see with using a water heater tank is what about when, not if but when the water heater fails? The aquarium will call for heat and get cold water pumped through the heat loop. It would not take long for the water tank to chill the aquarium, especially in the winter when the incoming water is colder. Same thing when someone runs all the hot water out. You could get severe temp swings.

I plan on using a gas tankless water heater to heat my 800 G system. When it fails, there will be electric backup heaters. You'd need huge electric heaters for backup on a gas tank heater.

If you're interested, I can post a link of a guy who did a very nice job.

Insulation....seriously, if you insulate it well enough you could probably get by with 2 300 watt heaters depending on how cold the room is and how hot you want it.
