White vinegar is a fairly safe way to lower pH.

IF PH OUT OF THE TAP IS 7.6 AND IN TANK IS 8.0 WHAT WOULD BE RAISING IT SOMETHING IN THE TANK PERHAPS SAND ROCKS SOME SORT OF CALCIUM REACTION HAPPENING?

I USE HYDROCLHORIC ACID TO LOWER PH

NOT FOR BEGINNERS THOUGH

PEAT WOULD BE MORE GENTLE BUT TAKE LONGER FOR THE DESIRED EFFECT.

Also known as simple "p.h. down" the lid locks, and CAN be used by a beginner. The easy thing to do though is use as little chems as possible. Don't fool with the p.h. unless you are breeding....

i have mostly clown loaches. fx5 is getting ready for speeding up the cycling process for 180gal coming in a few months. running hot magnum concurrently with fx5. suspected sand is culprit. using monterey beach sand from home depot. friend uses same sand but has more wood and reads lower ph. tap water has been consistent at 7.6.
i want to thank everyone for their advice. i have decided to use more wood and hope everything goes well.

peat, or a buffer is really about the only choices I know of.
