Best way to move fish from one tank set up to another...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Your old media in our 55g tank has the bacteria needed to support the load of your stock. Figure out some place to shove that in your sump for your 180. If you do not do this, you will have no bacteria in your 180 to support the bio load of the stock, thus causing your t tank to "cycle"

You don't necessarily have run your old filters on the new tank, but just empty out all the pads and rings or whatever else you have in your hang on back filter and pit that in your sump

Ok... I'm not sure which area of the wet/dry filter would work for that?

Also wouldn't putting Stability, Cycle or SafeStart in the tank help w/ this... I have used the SafeStart by Tetra before and that worked pretty well when I've been in long moves where I couldn't use the cycled water again...

If no place to put it, just take the old filters and throw them on the tank for quite a while and have the other filter running as well. Then after a reasonable time, remove it. Also as you stated putting chems in that remove chlorine, chloramines, etc will help. Keep in mind though if you do switch all of it over immediately after adding water, there will be a ph swing as the co2 in water hasn't dissolved yet. That's why people age water. To be safe I'd add the water, add the chems, run your new filter to turn over the water for a day or so, then switch the old filter onto there and then add fish.

I was gonna suggest this but now that I have sumps in all my tanks, I can't stand to see cords and wires and intake tubes!

Op- the sump for your 180 is plenty big so just find somewhere to put it. You could shove it in a chamber so it's submerged

Alright... may work... but the filters I'm using now will still be needed for the 55 gallon as I have a 7" Cichlid that will be staying in there... basically I'm kind of confused as how to keep some of the cycled media in the old tank & getting some in the new w/o disturbing the fish in the 55 right now...

One option I do have...

...my 55 does have 4 filter pouches...2 of them were changed maybe 10-14 days ago... maybe when I go to change out the other 2 used ones w/ new ones, I could put those used ones in the water of this wet/dry filter? The Bioballs in the 55 still have media on them that is helping that tank so maybe this is an option?
