Best way to rid of an algae bloom

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try reducing the sunlight from the window onto your tank, I would also recommend leaving the light off on the tank for a week, and do some water changes during that time to remove the current algae growth.

What kind of substrate are you using? Some have phosphates added to them for plant growth, and if you have some of that in your tank without plants, the algae will take up the nutrients.

Is your tap that acidic, or do you have something lowering the pH?

I am using river pebbles from petsmart. I do not think it has anything adding for plants.
Also I was using ph regulator for my tap water which comes out around 7.8

I would also try cutting down the lighting period as well since 12 hours can be quite a long time especially with sunlight hitting the tank...

As for diatom filters, you could try adding something like purigen in a fine mesh bag into your filter... That may help remove some of the problem...

1. over head light is unnecessary outside of direct viewing time. A timer is a good investment.
2. you can get rid of water borne algae/green water via a uv sterlizer, or covering the tank with a blanket for a number of days, all the while performing water changes.
3. increase the amount of water changes you do, reduce the amount you feed.

My tank is next to a window, yes. I am just using the standard fluorescent light on my tank. I will get a reading of my water parameters in a second.

Move the tank or cover the side of the tank adjacent to the window with dark paper.

The light is on a timer that runs from 8am til 930pm

Way way way to long. Reduce it to prime time viewing hours, depending when you are home. If you are home all day, decide on a 2-3 hour block.

I know what you are talking about. This happened to me. You can not see the fish unless they are at the glass. You need to put your fish in a different tank or bucket and completely drain the tank while rinsing out the gravel with fresh water. Mine had A LOT of stuff in the gravel. Then fill the tank back up and put the fish back in.
