Best ways to add air to a large aquarium?

Are you sure you even need to run an aerator? Those pumps and filters seem adequate enough to circulate the water and disturb the surface if angled properly. How densely-stocked is the tank? Have you tried observing the fish after shutting off the aerator? And how warm is the water?

Canister filters generally dissolve less oxygen into the water since the return pipe is usually below the water's surface. They are great for CO2 tanks for that reason. A wet/dry filter is probably the best for oxygenation, but unless your water is very warm and your tank is overstocked I think you could make it work without additional aeration. Do you know anyone you can borrow a dissolved oxygen meter from?
