So I have an empty tank in the kids room, and am going to set it up as a Wet Pet tank. My two options are either a Male Midevil, I hatched a year ago, or throw in one of my Male Buttikoferi from outside. Any preference, with reason why...

Both fish are great pets, how big of a tank? Butti's get huge, I had one in a 75 solo for a while and re-homes him because he got too big. You say outside, is he in a pond or something currently?
Butti's are in a heated Cichlid trough. I have (10) growing out trying to get a pair. All in the 3-4 inch range. So I can spare one... The Midevil is same size with a hump already growing well. Nice little personality in him.....
yup, what size is the tank in your son's room? Would this be a permanent home for the fish? what I'm getting at is that Butti's need very large tanks eventually, which I am guessing your aware of since you have 10 of them. If you go Butti, just know that unless the tank is a 180+, he can't stay there forever. Midevil could probably live in a 75 or 125 (125 better for male) for it's whole life and be fine.
As far as personality goes, they are both great choices, though I would probably go Midevil for sheer owner-interaction

The tank in the kids room 40gal breeder. Yes... Small. And yes.... I plan on upgrading later, but only to a 55gal. A Midevil will be okay. But I already know if I did the Butti, it will be temporary. It can just back outside.
Been there done that.... ALOT. I always compared them to the first one I had when they first came into the scene in the US. Male Blue Monkey ZZ. My favorite fish I have ever owned. And most aggressive. The (2) fish I listed and am thinking about are what I have an abundance of to just fill a space and not go by anything.
If your going to upgrade to a 55 anyway, why not make it a 75? 55 really isn't big enough for either fish long term, female midevil would be okay in there but if yours has a hump already it's most likely a male. 12"+ fish in a 12" wide tank permanently is pretty tight.
My vote would be to go midevil if your ok with getting him a 75, otherwise I'd just put the tilapia in there until it's about 8" then put him back outside.

Point taken. My befuddlement on this is that I have never had a Buttikoferi as a wet pet ONLY.... So not sure how the interactions will be compared to any Amphilophus species... Which is what I normally keep for any Wet Pet. Pure Red Devil, Pure Midas, Midevil, Trimac, Chancho, or even a Flowerhorn for that matter.... So I know how the Amphilophus are as a Solo fish tank, but how does the Butti compare?
