Go for it, see how it goes. Just be careful that they don't kill each other.

Ain't gonna let that happen paid 13 for that damn beta lol. Most I've spent on a fish. So far that is......

As far as I know...mixing Bettas with Gouramis is fine, but the Blue/Gold Gourami species (Trichogaster Trichopterus) are known to be more aggressive than advertised. I would avoid that particular species to mix with a Betta. I've kept a Betta with Pearl Gouramis with no issue.

And to let the cat out of the bag, some male bettas are placid and won't even fight each other.

True ^

I've kept fairly aggressive guaramis with a betta. The betta did not like the guaramis, but was too small to do anything about it. He would flare up if they got close, but that's about it. The guaramis didn't care about the betta.

the general rule of thumb is to get something that is not at all closely related. furthermore betta tankmates shouldnt resemble betta fish whether they are closely related or not in order to avoid any misidentification by the betta. another good idea as someone already mentioned is to get something that occupies the middle or better yet the bottom of the tank. the catfish will do the best out of your options.
