Ok this is just some info on what i have been doing:
-Adding ornaments and trying to make a betta friendly enviroment
-feeding high quality hikari bloodworms
-putting in things to make a bubble nest in
-warming up the water
-putting a healthy good looking female in a breeders trap
I didn't cover the top with seran wrap, but every time my betta tries to go up and start a bubble nest he will blow one, watch it pop, and stay still for awhile. the first night he really tried, but it seems like he's discouraged. I tried warming up the water. right now it's ~75. i have a air powered filter running. Please help :(
also i read that fighting is a learned behavior by growing up in isolation, so if i raised the fry together could i have bettas that would live happily together? Also, i know that the largest betta gives off a growth hormone that stunts the other ones, so i plan on keeping the water even cleaner than normal. I have a 10 gal. aquarium
Thanks ~John

bump the temp up to low 80's and make sure ur filter isnt creating surface movement cause it wil disturb the bubble nest.

If u raise the fry together eventually the males will start to fight the others and u will have to separate them, but u can keep the females together in the 10 gal.

Thnx for the fast response, i will try it. Petsmart had her labled a just "FM betta" but i think she is a DT. I guess we will see with the babies ;)

the water's at 80.5, he flares at everything, ESPECIALLY the female, and the filter's off. Do i need to cover with seran wrap? Ill take a pic later if i need to, just plz help

and the bubble lasts a little longer, then it pops. he will blow one, go flare at the female, go down and blow another one in a totally random place.

My daughter has a male betta that creates a large bubble nest underneath the floating oak leaves I throw in there every so often. He doesn't even bother anywhere else but rather right under the leaves. Might be worth a try...will add some tannin to the water as well.

nice trick to use it take a styrofoam cup and cut it in half. and float it ofver the water like a dome. he'll most likely build a nest there

and bumping the temp to 80F range will help too

I read that styrofoam will leach chemicals into the water that can be very deadly for your fish and other inhabitants.

quotes from http://green4u.wordpress.com/2008/05/22/why-styrofoam-is-bad/

Styrofoam does not breakdown easily and it releases chemicals when it gets wet that contaminates water that touches it thus contaminating the water supply.

...it can build up to levels that can cause fatigue, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, blood abnormalities, and even carcinogenic effects.

On another note, good luck with your betta! Mine has never made a bubble nest and I'm not sure why. I do 50% weekly water changes, keep the water at 78-80 degrees F, and feed NLS pellets and blood worms. I'm beginning to wonder if age has something to do with this. I believe that he is pretty old in betta years and is ready to go :(

^^interesting post.

ive been using styrofoam for years with no negative effects.
but yes, the website gives very good reasons why we shouldnt pollute or water ways :D

and if not, a plastic lead will work fine as well
