Betta Breeding???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Start with a high quality (expensive) sibling pair and the fry that carry true form will be worth about $20.00 max each at adult size if you can find the right buyers. Typical pet store mutts will sell for feeder prices.

The fry will cannibalize once the biggest few are big enough to eat the smallest, so your numbers will naturally decline of you don't separate them. But some of the smallest can be some of the prettiest. These last two batches I've raised have left me with all females. Apparently they grow faster. :) I like females better anyway.

For monsters' sake, please spawn some giants. They're still overpriced and there are no females on the local markets.

i used to breed betta's but only in the summer due to living in england and keeping them warm.

i got a very good looking pair to breed and a simple setup to keep the cost down.

with the fry i used to leave them in the tank as long as possible until the males start fighting.at this point i take all the males out and place them in plastic pint glasses and leave the females in the tank. i then let them grow a bit more until you can start to tell the good looking ones from the not so good.the not so good along with most the females so to my lfs who gave me virtually nothing for them but had the cheek to charge £7 - £10 each for them lol then i would just try and sell the rest via ebay and other sites.

but to be honest if your looking at making money from it you will need to be doing it on a very large scale. i did it for a couple of years and would be very suprised if i actually made anything.

you have to take into cosidersation fry food, the setup of the tank, cost of the breeding bettas and enough space/containers for the fry.

also please beware if your bettas are not ready to breed the females can and will kill the male. and its usually the males that cost more to buy. so your expensive new male you intend to breed could end up dead on your first try
