betta courtship

bowl bettas will need daily water changes, 100% every day is best. ammonia rises quickly in an unfiltered environment.

for your two males, it may be better to get a 10 gallon tank and divide it with a mesh divider. that way one filter and one heater could service both sides of the tank, and your betta boys would be much happier than living in bowls. just ensure the divider extends all the way to touch the underside of the hood or lid, because bettas are good jumpers! you wouldn't want to come home to see that one male has gone 'over the wall' and fought with the other male.

your bichirs will continue growing, whereas your bettas are about full size already. the fact that your bichirs are twice the size of the bettas already means they could try to eat the bettas, but get them stuck in the throat and both the bichir and the betta could die from this.

i would never chance housing any smaller fish with a bichir, no matter the bichir's size.

i wouldn't. once the bichirs get bigger, they could shove the mesh if it isn't really secure. plus, the betta fry will simply swim through the mesh and then you'd be back to what i mentioned before - the predator eating the fry faster than they can hatch. it would also be very stressful for the male betta caring for the fry while they are still in the bubble nest, and he could be likely to eat them all or abandon them because he is stressed. breeding bettas can be a rather delicate adventure!

best to have a separate tank for the betta breeding to happen in.

i would suggest picking up two used 10 gallons off your local craigslist. you should be able to get them pretty cheap. one divided for the males, and one for the breeding tank.

ah, one thing i just thought of - if you are merely breeding fish to feed the bichirs, why not go with something that is much easier to breed, is more prolific, and you only need one tank for? something like guppies? much easier IMO!

how much easier are guppies?

much much easier! they are a livebearing fish, and are very prolific in their breeding if given the right conditions. get some googling action going on and i'm sure you'll come up with a lot of websites that will help you out.
