mah fish have more personality then mah dog.

Pla Kat Thai (Roundtail) Bettas were bred as fighters. I would never fights Bettas (especially my Crowntail, lol) but I don't think it's as bad as dog fighting. Bettas just lose fins in fights, which I think is kinda like a dog getting a haircut (unless it gets infected or they lose their hard fin rays). Also, "fish fighting" nowadays just has to do with putting 2 Bettas in a tank with a clear divider and watching them display, which is actually good for Bettas when done only occasionally.

I personally don't like ANY form of animal cruelty PERIOD [even rodeo]..but my question is, should betta or any type of fish fighting be punishable to the degree of a felony?

So how exactly is Rodeo animal cruelty...if u mean how the bulls are treated then you are truly uninformed...the bulls get treated great. Professional bulls have better living then more then half the people on here. Along with horses. Every animal in rodeo probably gets better treatment then half the people on this site so IDK if you are just uninformed or never even been around a rodeo enough to see there is no cruelty. The hot shock is hardly anything...I got hit by them before and it just surprises you never even hurts you. And the flank strap HAHA it truly causes no pain you'd have better luck getting hurt in a box full of marsh mellows then getting hurt by a hot shock or flank strap. And spurs they arent even sharp...if they are you get hudge fines or you can be banned from that rodeo...

Oh fish fighting is just like using lve feeders except its notrighjtto do it for pleasure theway they do

Bettas have been selectively bred for heightened aggression; wild splendens are no where near as aggressive as modern bred fighting plakats. And, in the wild, they have ample opportunity to simply display, exchange a blow or two, and part ways - whereas in captivity, they are typically confined together in a small jar for a fight and thus can not escape even if they wanted to. There is nothing "natural" whatsoever about betta fighting, and the thought that it is somehow acceptable just because wild fish fight for territory is about as idiotic as suggesting that dog fighting is OK since wild wolves fight for territory.

Fish sustain fin and body damage in fights, which inflicts unnecessary pain, stress, and potential for infection. While the fish are not generally allowed to fight to the death, some do die from stress, injury, and infection after the fact. Even if most live, how does that make things better? Animals mauling one another for amusement is inhumane and unecessarry, period. "Culture" and "tradition" is not a blanket excuse for everything; cultures evolve and the fact that some stupid, inhumane crap has happened for many years doesn't mean it's just fine and dandy to let it go on unchalleneged. Even Thailand - where this all started - has banned betta fighting for betting purposes, which has significantly reduced the fighting hobby.

ETA: For those who think they just lose a few nips of fin, here's a pic from a well known betta fighter's site:

Oh yeah, nothing cruel about that *rolls eyes*

And don't even get me STARTED on the stupid little SOBs in the US fighting their petstore VTs and CTs because they're trying to look hard. Nothing drives me up the wall worse than seeing this little 17 year old ****s on YouTube with their sickly crowntails duking it out in a dirty, unheated bowl. I've been doing betta rescue for five years and if I get in one more emaciated fish with infected fins and big hanks of scale and gill plate ripped off because someone gets off on watching animals hurt each other, I'm going to start taking heads.

I agree with Fishy12 on rodeos. We have a ranch/farm near us that raises bucking bulls. These guys are pampered. How they train them to buck is by using a strap with a waited box. When the bull gives a good kick or a good spin move the box has a release pin which releases the strap and the box falls off. This is operated with a remote control. The bull feels no pain at all. At most they are only bucked once every 6 weeks. The ones that don't make the circuit are unlucky, mmmmnnn steak.

As far as fighting fish I'm on the fence. It is part of their natural life cycle as long as the loser has a escape route. Maybe because I'm male I enjoy watching 2 large males of any species face one another to determine the pecking order.
