Betta fish fighting ring where do u stand?

This thread has gone waaaaay out of it's original boundaries. It had potential as an interesting ethics debate, but then animal rights...then politics...

I have to admit, it was kinda fun

I am da chef brother I HAVE TO STIR THE POT .

To which end I have to say something that I am sure others on MONSTER fish keepers are thinking but won't say.

A thread like this would probably bring about different results if it were posted on acquaria central versus here, after all this is MONSTER FISH KEEPERS.

I am not saying not to post about non monsters, but rather do not be surprized at the adverse posts that are not complimentary on a thread like this. For after all a betta is not a monster except for in it's own mind.

And the fact that male betta fish regularly slaughter their mates makes me want to feed everyone of them that I am given to my bigger fish.

well breeding ur own fish or getting feeder goldfish or whatever thats fine its just the betta part that made me upset lol , didnt realize you bred ur own fish for feeders. thats fine by me

Must have missed that. Anywho, some Puffers, Cichlids, Bichirs, Anabantoides, Catfish...list goes on... behave a certain way for their owners and for no one else. Is it for food? Probably. The way to a ]v[0NSTER's heart is through its stomach

Well Bonita my full grown female zebra tilapia will actually swim up to my hand to be petted, and she gives me this funny look sometimes and has actually bit me before when I tried to touch another fish . Which makes me glad Im not in the water with her

My old Bichir loved attention, and would swim up and sit on top of the internal filter when people were in the room
She also handfed and one point. By that I mean I handfed her
She hated being petted though
She was a great fish.

My current ]v[0NSTER, my 2" Leopard Ctenopoma (little ]v[0NSTER lol) also perks up when I approach the tank. The other day he ate out of my hand

I think animal cruelty for sport should probably be a very heavy fine, I can't support the felony charge. We kill animals every day for our enjoyment, why do you think we eat beef because there is no other alternative? Heck no because a cheeseburgers taste so good.

I do think it should be a felony if you maliciously kill or harm another's animal yourself.

Pla Kat Thai (Roundtail) Bettas were bred as fighters. I would never fights Bettas (especially my Crowntail, lol) but I don't think it's as bad as dog fighting. Bettas just lose fins in fights, which I think is kinda like a dog getting a haircut (unless it gets infected or they lose their hard fin rays). Also, "fish fighting" nowadays just has to do with putting 2 Bettas in a tank with a clear divider and watching them display, which is actually good for Bettas when done only occasionally.

Honestly, they're fish. Nobody should go to jail for fighting cheap little fish. Is it wrong to fight fish? Sure. But really, who cares? Might sound cruel, but there are bigger things to worry about than some cruelty to fish. The ethics of fishkeeping are screwed up anyway, we keep fish in glass boxes 100x smaller than their real habitats. And no, I do not believe that fish have anywhere even close to the emotions or intelligence of a dog. Most dogs display several emotions during a single day, can you say the same for fish? And can fish sense when you're feeling down and comfort you like a dog would?
Just to clarify, I don't think people should fight fish. But really, they're fish. Would you complain if people were fighting insects? I'm sure there are some insects that are just as smart/recognize their owners just as well as some fish. The mian difference between animals like that and smarter animals like dogs and cats is that they don't show emotion.

fighting dogs is a little different than fighting bettas.. if you can't see this then i think you might have issues analyzing situations. no, i don't think people should fight fish, but as the quote says.. they're fish

fighting dogs also has a much bigger impact on society. if fighting dogs get loose, they attack other dogs or people. your betta is not going to break free and go kill granny smith

AND all this speculation would be if dogs and fish were on the same mental level. sure, your fish are comfortable with you, and it seems like they enjoy your presence, but really.. they love you to feed them. if someone feeds your fish in your absence, your fish will not miss you.

if you put your fish in the wild, they would simply swim away. they have no attachment to you. a good dog is not only going to come back, but find his way home to you


that does not mean you cannot love your fish more than your dog, or have more fun giving them human characteristics, but be honest with yourself. its a fish
