fighting dogs also has a much bigger impact on society. if fighting dogs get loose, they attack other dogs or people. your betta is not going to break free and go kill granny smith

AND all this speculation would be if dogs and fish were on the same mental level. sure, your fish are comfortable with you, and it seems like they enjoy your presence, but really.. they love you to feed them. if someone feeds your fish in your absence, your fish will not miss you.

if you put your fish in the wild, they would simply swim away. they have no attachment to you. a good dog is not only going to come back, but find his way home to you

Yeah, those are some more good points I especially agree with. You never see any stories on the news about a 2-year old getting maimed by a starving and abused fish. Dogs, you definitely do. And the part about your dog missing you, I agree 100%. I'm not sure how many of you have been on vacation and come back to your dog waiting for you, wagging their tail and whining. That's not for food. Or maybe even just coming back home from a stressful day at work/school only to have your dog rush up and start comforting you. You know how good that feels? Heck, there have been times when I'm gone for five minutes from the house, and when I get back my dog is ecstatic. Then, I might head down to the fish tank. No such reaction.

EDIT: And just as I finished typing this, I looked out the window to see my dog standing on a pile of snow, staring at me and wagging her tail. As soon as I looked at her, she rushed to the back door and started barking to get in. She got in the house, and immediately goes around to all the family members, greeting every one. And there's another thing about fish. Dogs, or at least my dog, are happy to see pretty much anyone. Fish usually only recognize their owners, since they feed them. Then, dogs also dislike certain people. I have never seen my fish dislike a specific person.

I have seen people complain about bug fights before.

Well then, I'd think most of the stuff I said would also ring true about bugs. Or any other animal like that.

hey the big beetle fights are awesome! lol

Exactly what on earth does a fish's intelligence or bond to humans have to do with it's ability to experience pain and suffering? Do all of you making this argument think the mentally retarded don't feel pain as acutely as someone with a PHD? Seriously, ridiculous. The issue here isn't the intellect of the animal, the price of the animal, how friendly the animal is, or any other of the inane BS that has been used to devalue bettas. The issue is that the animal is being needlessly exposed to pain, suffering, and sometimes death so people can get their jollies.

About the only point I agree on mentioned here is that dog fighting is a greater sociological issue and thus probably deserves a stronger legal penalty. Drugs and arms dealing are common at dog fights, and as mentioned fighting dogs are bred and trained for a viciousness (especially in modern dog fighting) that makes them dangerous to humans. Policing these acts and dealing with the dogs is costly to taxpayers as well.

When I worked for the man, I would find dead bettas periodically by smell. Every once and a while I would find a cup hidden in the store where someone took two bettas cups and put them together into one cup. One would kill the other, then it would die eventually because it would be hidden forever. The smell would give it away.

People are cruel, life sucks, **** happens, blah blah blah...

Oh, and dont worry Danalito. You had the winning end of that rodeo debate the whole way through. In some arguments, you have to learn that some people are stubborn and wont change their mind or take their blinders off. It's best just to leave it alone sometimes.

Yes, fish feel pain. BUT THEY'RE FISH. No matter how hard anyone tries, the general public will never view fish on the same level as cats and dogs. And the intellect is not the only issue I brought up, in fact the part about emotions is what I thought especially set them apart from other animals. So while fish may feel pain, they can't express any sort of emotion to show that they are. Honestly, all of us here put fish in glass boxes. Is that ethical? Just to be clear, I don't think fighting fish is good, I'm completely against it. However, it should not be viewed as any sort of crime.
