I have maded all my vac. Wish I could help. I got one for you guys. Ready if a young male breeds with a older female nd the fry or kept in abnormal conditions during the frist 5 to 6 weeks. there is going to be a large number of male in that fry right??

What will happen to the females if there partially ovariectomized???

Get this one and I'll buy you a cookie. LOL it's basic betta 101 !!!!!

What type of abnormal conditions? I was under the impression that young males bred to older females produced slightly more female offspring. I know this is the case with guppies. Perhaps I was wrong.

The females then should start showing the charisteristics of males. Is that how you get females with very long fins? My specialization is not in bettas, but I find them very interesting. Do you have a link to a scientific paper that talks about this?

Very Very close!!!!!! one of the abnormal conditions could be poor water. Then a larger number of the fry will become male again. Then with the females this say
"partially ovariectomized { most of their ovaries cut away } that last part pretty much gave it away. But your really very close. I'll find a link for you but as of now I don't have one I know of a book that talks about it. it's by BARRON'S called {Bettas }Now along fin female is normal just a genetics thing. But it's not normal for the female to have the long fins.

The Answer to the question is really close to your. The female's will turn into fully functional males. Able to breed to other females and even have offsprings. The offsprings will not in harit the trat either. {Dr.Lucas 1983} was the discover of this trat in bettas. Now I don't know his full name or I'd give it to you for refrance, now most of my info came from Bill Bevier in Fort Lauderdale Flroada who has the number 1 betta breed set up in the world he breeds and sells more bettas then any other single person in the U.S.. Now I'm not a pro bettas at all. I'm a high school drop out who told his self that " I can learn anything I want and use that knowladge to better myself "
I read 99% of my time anything and everything related to bettas,Apistogramma's and breeding. I have readed over 75 books on these spices with more coming soon. Most of my knowledge on Bettas came frist hand "there's no better way to learn then hands on " And I'm not going to lie to you. I spent 8 to 10 hrs aday on the net reading and on forums like this one trying to increase my knowledge of my hobbie and breding hatchery. I hatch 100% of my frys from my Apiso's,Laetacara dorsigera/curviceps,kribs,royal plecos,Mango plecos without the perants.
I do this so they have more contact with humans and are use to the tounch and handling. This way they are less scared by me and tamer. They live longer and I have less loss. My Bettas are all hand feed and they will lay in the plum of my hand to eat and just set. Now i'm NOT SAYING this makes mine any better then anyone elses "So please don't take it that way " I'm just saying hand rasied fish sem to take to changes better in new tanks and adjust better to new setting. Out of all my sells I have only had 2% of them dyi. I thank thats pretty good.
So when you ask me about scientific papers to back this all I can tell you is I read it in a book. LOL I've read it on the net or talked with the aurther of the book or I've chated with breders from around the world.

Did you know the answer to the question IKhan,it's not that hard. I have had this happen the females where all around 2 months old and I had a death in the family. I left my mothere-in-law in charge of the feeding and cleaning. She didn't clean nothing for over 2 weeks and just kept feding. I came home and oh man it was bad.
I noticed that around 50% of my females had started getting longer fins and taking on the look of the male. This was around the 5th day after I got back. After 1 month all the females had the long fins and no marking of females at all. I was freaking out!!! I called Bill Bevier in florda and he told me this was normal .It happens quit a bit in bad water condistions.
Have you ever seen this in any of your fry IKhan?

It's funny how life changes you and your souroundings HUH? I had a fire in the hatchery yesterday and have lost all my bettas and three of my breeding Apisto pairs. Fire marsal beleaves some bull**** kids set the building on fire when they could get in to it. I have 3 wittness's that see them messing with the front door right before it started.
I've been wanting to KILL some kids { if I knew whitch ones it was } It would be on. Out of 16 tanks I had 13 survie. But the fish did not, the water temps got to high. I'm going to be cleaning up today. But it's not looking good. I'm out of buisness now So I'll be have a sell on tanks. to try and I mean to try to get going again. But I just don't see it happening. I can't afford to restock the tanks. I just can't
thanks

That is beyond horrible.

A few years ago I kept all my fish and plant breeding stock in a large tightly covered heated pond outside. A family of 5 large racoons sat on the cover until it broke, then ate almost all of the fish and plants (and took the rest out of the water). I was so upset. Years and years of working on those strains... wasted. I had been breeding for metallic green halfmoon longfin (almost as long as males) female bettas. I had the nice color and fin length, but the width was only at superdelta. Plus I was breeding madagascar lace plants. And next week they got into all my bonsai. I hate raccoons! Now all my fish and bonsai are inside. I only keep daphnia ponds now.

I hope they catch those kids. Did you have any kind of insurance?

Yea a little but it's not going to cover the fish, but it will pay for the tanks and equitment { Heaters, pumps ,cansteris, the big boy lose here my R/O UNT AND RECAVER } after the fire marsal bill { In living color LOL } went throw the building and my C/O to tank was right in the hottest pary of the building. Tanks broke, hoods melted, light bulbs melted and ge this and I'm not kiding one bit.
There was glass melted to the top of the co2 tank. The only thing that kept it from blowing the building sky high and I mean sky high was that I had just had the tank filed the day before and had unhooked the back up tank. I was going to hook up the new tank after I had double checked my lines for links{ I had gone throw to much co2 to fast } Luckly I did wait and didn't hook it up.
I'm meeting with the ajuster monday afternoon to see what his superviser says about adding $7,500.00 i fish lose to the claim.

regular I bred betta for my first time 6 months ago and had much success... 143 juveniles with NO deformities NO culling and still have beautiful offspring available...I'm still trying to sell some

this will be my 2nd time to breed betta...i just ordered a giant that I'm going to breed for fun with a feather-tail normal sized female. Both bought from the USA!

I should know in about 2 months if there is breeding success in my experiment!

daddy and mommy look like! i'm so very excited!

can anyone tell me if it's possible to breed regular betta's with giant betta's? i decided to give it a shot, they go thru all the motions like a regular betta spawning, even up to the embrace. male gets the eggs, brings them up to the nest, and starts guarding. but the eggs never hatch. i'm beginning to think he may be shooting blanks, the female has been bred with a betta s. before so i'm pretty sure it's not her.
maybe the female is past her prime?
