Hey guys,

Question: Are Bettas known to sulk?

I moved my male betta to a smaller tank. He was originally in a 3 gallon now is in a 1.7 - 2 gallon tank.

The betta seems to just lay at the ground sometimes or float at the surface. In the other tank he was active swimming all over the place. He always wanted food too. But for the last 3 days he seems to not care as much, just nibbles a little.

One more question: Would bright light bother the betta? I have some plants in the tank and I lowered the light to make it more intense for the plants. But I can raise it several inches if I need to. Just wanna know if bettas are sensitive to light like some fish. In other words, would it be detrimental and stressful to the fish?

Thx

Yes bettas are known sulkers. Also bettas do not like bright lights the water they come from in the wild is usually heavily shaded and usually stained a dark color from leaves falling leaves. I would suggest getting some floating plants to help block the light and make sure to turn the light off when you go to bed. If your not wanting real plants they have fake ones that can be floated.

Do you have a filter running on this tank? The reason I ask is if you do and moving him to a smaller tank may have made a current in the tank and bettas do not like any kind of currents. Also if I may ask why did you move him to a smaller tank?

I'm probably not old enough to answer this post, but I'll give her a go anyhow:nilly:. Bright lights are not a good idea. Erk's idea about floating plants is a good one. Good luck.

My betta was always sulking and depressed. Got him a psychologist and found out that my betta had low self esteem and didnt like what he saw in the mirror. Somthing about always trying to fight his reflection.

The light isn't too bright. I did move it back up several inches now. Yeah I wanna get a few floating plants. No I don't have a filter on this tank. In the 3 gallon I did but it was weak and did not cause alot of current. I just think the betta got used to the other tank and did not like being moved, and moved to a smaller tank to boot.

Why not move it back?

The tank was too heavy to put on my book shelf, and I was getting a leak from the filter. I did not want this to cause problems with the wood on the shelf. Plus I needed extra power sockets, so downgrading helped me with that. I originally was gonna shut down the tank and give the betta away. But I felt sorry for the fish and gave him this little home. Went out and bought a clamp lamp so I could grow plants too.

Whats the water temp?

Don;t know exactly unless I test it. But I used to keep a female betta in a container like this and the temp never got below 70F. I live in southern california and it's warm, and my house never really gets below 70F. I also have a tiny heater I could use if it got too cold. I did use it occasionally during the winter with the female betta.

Clip on lights are are not recommended because they put off a lot of heat and will warm the water. Then when you turn off the light the water ill cool again. I would check you water temp after the light has been on all day like check it before you turn it off at night and see what the temp is then check it again in the morning before turning the light on.
