Do you want a proper geographically correct biotope? or doesn't that matter?
If so, leaving off the fishes that are too big, from the list below .there are hundreds of geographically appropriate south Asian choices

My anal sense, always prefers a proper biotope.
So for me, I stuck withthe wild type Bettas of Borneo, and Malay peninsula.

Trio of Betta edithae (left), B albimarginatta in the middle, and B edithae spawninhing on the right
Perfect for that size tank, and I could keep more than 1 betta species in that tank.
And... use geographically correct rice fish, danios, Barbs, or small loaches(etc) as tank mates, and/or dither fish

I have a male betta fish in a 33 gallon planted with 12 cardinal tetras and 2 otto catfish did have a female convict in there and I could see the betta was uncomfortable with the presence of the convict so moved the convict . Tetras and betta ignore each other my betta doesn't have long flowing fins all good so far.

I maintain a couple tanks for a buddy and he had a betta in a 55g with lots of water lettuce so it had places to rest. The other inhabitants were a pair of green severums, tetras, danios and loaches. There were a couple of syn decorus too. The betta was ignored and lived out its life in that tank.
