Corys will definitely be fine. The Cardinals should, as well. The only thing you need to watch with small, quick betta tankmates is that they don't nip the betta's finnage.

I definitely agree. bottom-dwellers should be fine. I had my betta in with a few rummy-nose and bleed-heart tetras, and I think the bleed-hearts were the nippers. When I put my betta in, it had long flowing elegant fins like a evening gown you might say. it came out with a tore-up miniskirt =/

however, all is well!
(don't put them in with mollies, especially male) because both male fish have established hierarchies, where the male is the boss. they will flare up and clash.

I found that Bettas are fine with other fish, but make sure the other fish aren't going to be tempted to nip at the Betta's fins. Barbs are a no no and neither are Angels. I wouldn't recommend Fancy Guppies, just because I've seen Bettas attack them. Most Tetras are good, Cories are great, Plecos, and they look great in a planted tank.

Just chiming back in to say...it all depends on the individual fish. That alone is the biggest factor.

Also resaying.....NO FEMALES WITH THE MALE!!!!

You could however get the male a 10g...then use the 20 for a "sorority" of like 6 females:D

indeed if you wanted like 3 female bettas that'd be cool.. but the males and females should only be mixed at mating time...

it also depends alot on the individual fish

i had a betta that was fine with killifish and dwarf gouramis
and another that tried killing a rock.. so it varies greatly

from what ive read....

no fish that have long and elegant fins like a male betta.
females should not be kept with a male unless for breeding only

Gouramis are same family as betta and therefor should not be kept in the same tank.

I am in the process of getting one and putting in my 150gal.
figure it should make the lil guy happy ....goin from a tiny cup to this

I plan on trying 2 male bettas since I will have many hiding spots and ample room
