My daughter won a betta and I've got him set up in one of those 10G tank kits from wallyworld. I'm thinking she'll end up wanting to get him a "friend" so I'm curious what might work. I've only ever kept them solo; well, once I tried a pair but she murdered him. Anyway I thought it might be tricky...little tiny fish are in danger, and bigger things might nip the betta. Maybe cories? How many cories could work in a 10G with a single betta?

Yeah, they would work..maybe some danios or other small fast swimming fish

Whats the filtration like? Most bettas prefer NOT to have fast flowing water in the tank and can be stressed out by it

It's just the UGF that came with the tank. I'm not a big UGF guy but with such a small bioload I think it should be OK. The tank will be on a 50% weekly w/c regimen like my main tank.

It depends on the betta's temperment, some will kill just about anything smaller than themselves, while others can be kept in community tanks. The only thing I was ever able to keep with my old betta was a single zebra danio (the betta killed the other danios).

small Killifish do fine and corys

Hmm I hadn't thought of killies. The cories will want to school though and I'm not sure how many would fit.

The wrath of betta's is famously exaggerated IMO. I have two males living in a twenty and they have never shown any aggression. They even like to huddle together in the plants. I have found guppies are great tank mates. They are pretty like betta's ( not as pretty, but still pretty) and the bettas don't seem to care about them at all.

I disagree. I don't think it is exaggerated at all. There are many cases in which bettas cannot be kept with anything else (I know this from personal experience). Of course there are exceptions where they do fine with practically anything, but it isn't always that way.

I have kept 18 bettas and they have all been fine with every other fish. Not all could be housed together but about 1/4 of them were docile enough.

Then I'd consider myself lucky if I were you, although having a 25% success rate would still be reason to be cautious about adding tankmates imo.
