So I have kept fish for over 10 years now, but have never set my sights on a Betta. My GF that I live with just adores them and wants one in my 10 gal planted tank. Are they ok with other fish or do they need to be kept alone?

my 10 gal inhabitants are 4 guppys, 3 amano shrimp, and 2 wood shrimp.

Sounds like a pretty sweet tank.

I think personally that the Betta would bother your shrimp...

Might possably bother the guppies as well. They tend to be aggresive towards fish that look like other bettas. You could try a female betta though, they will have shorter finnage (make sure you're not buying the more uncommon short-tail male). They generally work well with other fish and ever other female bettas if they are stocked right.

seen it alot and personally done it.
imo i think bettas are overrated as an aggressive fish.
they are quite calm and peaceful when comm with other peaceful fish.
so my answer would be yes it shud be ok.

yeah the guppies are probably going to cause problems. i assume they are fancy guppies right?

I keep a betta with loaches, neons, cories, cherry barbs, and a gold nugget.

yeah bettas are actually pretty placid with anything that doesn't remind them too much of other bettas. i had mine in with a honey gourami and it only bothered it in the mating season when the g's color intensified.
doe's your gf knowmuch about fish why not just put a dwarf blue gourami in there? or those red ones? (i forget their names)

The Red ones are Dwarf Honey Gouramies.
