Bettas - Tell me about this fish

Male bettas, imo, do have personality. I have 6 of them currently, and they are all very active and friendly. I keep them in 1.5 gallon tanks with a small filter and heater. They are very happy in there. I tried to move them to 5 gallons, but they weren't happy in the 5 gallon tanks. These 1.5 gallon tanks are hard to cycle, however and i find putting a small sponge filter in it works better.

As for females, I have found many beautifully colored females. There fins are, however, much smaller.
 
I lived in Thailand for about 1 year and have seen bettas fighting and people betting on the outcome. The bettas that are in pet stores our one's that have great colors and fins aren't used for fighting. The bettas I saw in Thailand and used for fighing are wild caught and are a drab color and don't have such vibrant colors like the store bought.
