I already have a 2217 that i plan on using on my new 180G. The Fluval FX5 was my 1st choice because of the superior water flow + price.

I wanted to by the same bio media that came with my 2217, substratpro. That stuff is $100 for 5L, the 2217 which comes with that is only $180.

2 FX5s + Media = $600
3 2217 = $600

if i choose option B, I'll be running 4 2217s on a 180G mbuna tank.

What do you think?

1x Eheim 2262: $430
5L EhfiMech: $30
5L Ehfi Substrat Pro: $100
5L Ehfi Substrat: $30
----------------------------
total: $590

And you have fewer ugly hoses, still sufficient turnover (900 gal/h) and more biocapacity than with the Fluvals (media capacity 2262: 4.8 gal - media capacity 2 FX5: 3 gal - media capacity 3x 2217 4.8 gal). BTW: substrat and substrat pro are identical besides the shape. If you use substrat as the top layer in your canister it won't matter - the media below will already have filtered out solid waste, which would otherwise clog up the substrat. Use EhfiMech on the bottom one way or another. Not using mech first is a waste of money because the biomedia's pores will fill up and your expensive substrat(pro) will turn into mech only media - the same efficiency as ehfi mech.

3 FX5 with media on ebay = $600

:)

3 2217 = 750 GPH
2 Fx5 = 1200 GPH

How much bio media can the 2217 hold?

3 FX5 in a 180 gal = whirlpool ;) + 6 hoses in your tank

2262 won't put out 900 GPH. Just to let you know. It will probubly put out around 700-800. Still a lot. Eheim only put on one of their universal pumps which is 900 GPH at zero head with zero resistance in flow.

fx5, lot of neat mods you can do. ebay it up too
