Better than a glass canopy or ANY cover... i have an idea

i think better than mesh is orange fencing then. you know, the kind thats used in construction wrapped around the delineators.

theres NO WAY any aro can break through that. yet it would soften the impact 10fold compared to glass. its better to splash some measley water than have a broken tank, dead-on-impact aro.

EDIT: oh and im not talking about the paper-thin fencing. im talking about the flexible plastic one. they take a 300 lb built samoan guy 5 seconds of hard pulling to even start to stretch so the velocity of a pointed 2-3foot fish throwing itself at it couldn't do dust to it.

Probably not, but to keep them in the tank you better have a heavy thick secure top on the tank. Having them is a large enough tank will also help with keeping them from jumping.

I was gonna say the same thing...My aro never jumps really in the large tank he's in. Even when he's spooked, he just quickly swims to the other side. The larger the swimming area, the more comfortable they feel. I would also guess personality is a factor as well. I can hand feed my aro and he'll "gently" take the food from my hand. I haven't been able to do that with all of my aros so I think I kinda lucked out on a really docile aro in my big tank.
 
Very nice idea with the heavy duty nets. But my only concern will be for what if the arowana's fin or whatever gets caught/tangled in the net and therefore dies up there!:eek:

Otherwise an open top tank like that will cause a lot of evaporation like others said as well. But it is always better to be safe than sorry. Or how about a combination of both? I always thought of having a moat around my tanks in case a fish might jump but I never had the chance to build one......:D
 
Have the water high up and a thick glass lid is prob the best way. As for the net maybe have it right above the tank and have the water lvl high, so if it does get caught it wont be in the air. Tho there will be alot of splashing
 
I'm new to aros but i have had many large jumping saltwater fish and i have always used large canopies with 1 inch styrofoam and also if possible add extra timers to your lights so that u get a sunrise effect instead of all on.
 
Im not saying to do this but this is what I did, and when I get another I will do it again. I used somthing like a tank divider, I think it was a knitting thing, and built it 2-3' high like someone stated earlyer like a moat. and I had a pully system and hung worms and let him jump over a foot up to eat them.

I think he liked it, and when I showed it to friends and people they thought it was awesome. The evaporation did not bother me, and because I did waterchanges weekly it really didnt matter.

He still got dropeye, but it also might keep him looking up more, in my gallery look at the leaf fish photo and you can see the plasatic netting I used.
 
how about attatch suction cups to it and submerge it about an inch below the waterline so he cant get any running start at all?
