bichir aggresion

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't say they're exactly agressive but anything that fits in their mouth is pretty much game for them. That and it hasn't stopped mine before from attempting a chunk or two out of other fish.

Hello,

i had a ornate (i gave him to a friend due to his breeding experiences) who was about 12 inches long when he killed all cichlids in the tank he lived in. They were all Jack Dempseys - the biggest was about 6 inches long!
In only a month he killed a dozen of them. First the small ones, which he eat in one piece, later the bigger ones - in two or three pieces.
All other bichirs i have do not slash fish in pieces, the only one i could watch was this ornate.
I'm always astonished about the size of fish a bichir could manage - and also about the quantity. It's seldom but sometimes i feed goldfish ... a dozen of them are eaten in less than a hour!
For my opinion it's not a good idea to keep bichirs and cichlids together. It's possible that all of them would be eaten or - another worst case - the cichlids are breeding and will do massive stress all along the tank - bichirs do not like stress .. to say it again: The are very sensible!

Greetings

Uwe
