Bichir and Apple snails?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i had 4 apple snails with my 2 bichir and bgk...3 are still alive and well. 1 was eaten...not sure by who.

I've got a baseball sized apple snail living with my 10" ornate and 16" congicus bichir with no problems

large snails may survive, small ones will get eaten for sure. I throw 20-30 large ramshorns snail once every week or two and they and they disappear overnight

Yes, I don' want that to happen so I'm only aimming for the big ones at my LFS. Its like the size of 2 heads of my largest bichir (ornate). So I doubt the bichirs would attempt to swallow them whole.

the issue I had was that the snails would try to graze on the intake of the filter, get stuck, and have their bodies ripped otu fo their shells. My polys (18"or so endlis) didn't really bother them except for the jostling at feeding time.

I keep a few pond and ramshorn snails in my 82gal light planted endlis growing tank. I'll likely try Apple Snails in there. It's a common sight to find a pond or ramshorn snail on top of one of my endlis (one male, four females).

They don't seem to mind at all, even at feeding time. If Apple Snails are a good source of food for them I'm likely into breeding them into young adults (I have done that before) for them as snack. I figure spirulina enriched snails might be a nutritive food option for endlis.

Two pics to share. First one shows my male endli with a Ramshorn snail on top of him.

Second pic (from today) shows a female endli with a pond snail in her snout, quite close to her right hand nostril (she "dived" into substrate after capturing a Tiger Barb) and shortly afterwards the pond snail "decided" to climb on her.

wow awesome pics there.

Do the snail just hitch a ride? Or do they do any real damage on the slime coats?
