far from common. they were described in 2004, and that was about when they became known to the fish hobby world. Japan imported the first specimen in 2006, and in 2007, other countries (US, UK, Germany) have limited number of them available. i know Taiwan also has a few shipped out from the US.

How big are the two at your lfs? Are they the real thing? how much are they charging? i hope they are not retropinnis (both have long body). i know in Singapore retropinnis are sold under a few different names, e.g. lowei, and some seem to think that retro and 'lowei' are two different fish from what i've read on arofanatics.

i was reading in one of the bichir threads on arofanatics, and basically what they concluded is lowei = zaire green = retropinnis at lfs in singapore. from what i've read, palmas buettikoferi is not common in singapore. if they're calling it lowei as well, thats a potential for lots of misID :(

also i misspoke earlier about retro vs. lowei. It seems its actually between zaire green and lowei that some stores sell as different bichir because one is lighter, one is darker, and one shows more patterns etc. But they're actually all retropinnis (used to be called zaire green btw)...just individual variations.

there are 2 lfs next to each other.
one has the eyeless retros.
labelled lowei.
other has palmas butti labelled lowei as well.
