I have been wondering if a bichir would be a cool pet to keep, since I have a 200+ gallon tank, which is empty.....is a bichir a gd & fun fish too keep?and what are its a needs and food?tanks!

Bichirs hardly move, they are ambush predators considering that you might be bored with them. What are looking in a fish to take care? Also there is a specific forum for bichirs its under ancient fishes then click on Polypterus. HTH!

There are a ton of choices, im sure this will be moved to Polypterus soon but an awful lot of different fish will fit in a 200 for life, and if you plan to upgrade to something larger then it would make a great growout for larger specie. You can fit any bichir specie in there, i suggest you go under the vendor forum and look at Jurassic Aquatics stocklist, they have the best selection of bichir ive ever seen!

Caring for them is not very difficult, keep a ph of 7.5-8.0 and theyll be happy. They dont like very much flow as most barely move, but the Palmas complex may be quite active. My Polli and Beutokoferri are both quite active. You can fit a nice pile of bichirs in there, good luck!

snakeheads are a nice alternative, and they seem to live well with bichirs, however they are extremly aggressive. a smaller species of gar like Florida or spotted also might work well, but without the snakehead

Are you in the USA? You can't own a snakehead here.
