I got the bichir yesterday on 12/24/09 for 29.99$ at 4". It is a delhezi bichir. I found him in a small tank with a small oscar and no decorations; he was being fed shrimp pellets and that is not a sufficient diet for this ravenous monster.

So i bought a very expensive bag of 9.99 hikari sinking carnivore pellets. The green terror goes gaga for them but the Delhezi simply ignores them. He was ignoring food at the store but i couldn't give up this steal.

December 23, 2009 (day i got him)

I am totally awe struck with this guy, i am pretty sure he is a male too. He is mainly hiding behind the rock and is breathing heavily. I have noticed he only has one external gill, this may be the cause. Occasionally he shoots to the top and grabs a gulp of air. His nostrils went pink and he was ignoring food. The pleco attempted to suck on him but stopped after a try because i think the delhezi stabbed both the GT and pleco.

He is a lot more active, nostrils no longer pink. He likes the left side of the 55g where the majority of the plants are. His colors have intensified and he still occasionally shoots to the top for air. There is plenty of aeration. No compatibility issues. Still not eating.

I will post pictures when i find my camera :WHOA:

drfostersmith.com has good prices on hikari food. I just bought a ton of sinking carnivore pellets, food sticks, and massive delite from there.

I have had a pleco with my bichir for a year now with no damage of any kind, but I have heard stories and seen pictures where it happens. Keep an eye on that.

I hate plecos, all of them, hope its not going to be another day in your diary when you find your plecos suck dry your bichirs.

Agree about the plec, take it out its not worth the risk especially as its already tried to suck on him.

He will eat dont worry, mine love the cheap catfish pellets or try bloodworm, most fish never turn that down.

Very healthy and brighter colors. Still not eating and he is much more active. I am so glad i bought him. The pleco is no longer bothering him, the green terror dares not go near his deadly array of polypterus (many fins). I try about twice a day to coax him with the food, should i do just once a day?

Here are some pictures:

I feed mine once a day. They like live fish, frozen shrimp, and sometimes pellets...Well, my senegalus does. My juvenile endlicheri doesn't yet.

Much less active. Still healthy, very nocturnal. Have not observed feeding yet.... Good colors... extremely cool...
A question:
He only has one external gill, is that fine?

polypterus are nocturnal fish, therefor i would put some food in the tank in the evening when your turning the lights off so it will be more likely to get used to the food your feeding and then will probably eat in the day more readily. they also will eventually lose there external gills being as they are air breathing fish, so leave about 2 inches of space at the top of the tank so it can obtain air and not drown.
