In the water
When I came home it was laying on the bottom with it's belly blown open. It
looked like someone cut it with a knife. It was alive this morning any idea
what happened.

it could of been the texas cichlid....

blown open stomach sounds like it could be a tankmate did that after death.

what do you feed? how much?

it wasn't the eel or the Texas i know that. my dad was a EMT for 25 years and he seen people with blow open stomachs after gas gets trapped in their body some how and he said that might have happened. the cut looked like someone took a knife a gutted him. their was no jagged edges or anything and it was right down the middle of the belly.

Bichir's have very hard scales and if it was a fine cut it did not explode....What type of Pike are we talking about Pike Cichlid? or Escox/Hepsetus Odoe? I'll tell you it ain't the pictus, and Geos don't have the proper mouth shape....It's down to The Eel(that should be in salt) or the Texas/Pike

55 gallon with a texas locked inside... it's about that time...lol you better get a bigger tank or the other tank mates will follow... sorry for your loss!!

texas' can be psychos over territory... one underrated fish... mine has killed larger Midas and RD males it wasn't pretty either.. the dempsey it killed when younger i could barely recognize him it was brutal... although some people say they think it has FH in it.. half say it's straight texas other half say its got FH in it.... so i just call her a texas/FH just incase... either way they are a force to be reckoned with... especially over territory..

also how big is the eel to bichir.. my buddy's snowflake never goes after the bigger fish... it is in a salt water tank too though...lol
