Any info on the ideal percentages in bichir food? In particular, I'm looking for the ideal protein and fat percentages. I've got mine eating little chunks of pollack and would like to know if he should be switched to a food higher in fat. His also consists of shrimp pellets. Any feedback is appreciated.

copied and pasted from the primer in the pinned section....

"NUTRITION FOR CARNIVORES
Below are the agreed upon nutritional requirements for predatory fish
below that is a list of necessary vitamins usually supplied and just for informational
purposes.
PROTEIN:: 45% or more (this would be the ideal)
FAT:: 3% Min. to 6% Max.
FIBER 2% Min. to 4% Max "

Thanks, but I was looking for more species/genus specific information. After reading another sticky about feeding live feeders, the fat content of foods has started to concern me.

Its not really rocket science. For instance Hikari has made it easy as hell to feed your bichirs when they came out with Massivore Delite. Use Massivore as your staple food and your pollock, market shrimp, earthworms, etc. as your supplemental. Its not like in the wild bichirs are picking and choosing what they eat for its nutritional content. I guess all Im trying to say is don't make feeding more complicated than it has to be. Enjoy!:D

My 5" poly prefers Omega One shrimp pellets to the Hikari carnivore pellets. They're made of good ingredients as well, so that may be an option for you.

I haven't seen any massivore near me. It's rare to even find hikari sinking carnivore pellets.

I know in my area it is hard to find and is expensive when I find some. Don't let that deter you from getting some. Go online and find some. Im sure all of members here on MFK order their food online. I usually order mine from an ebay seller. Going to get some from johnptc this weekend. My bichirs love it and have gotten big on it. :headbang2

Here is a link for you for starters:

I usually do the 2.2lb. size, as it will last me longer than the smaller size. Good luck.

the massivore pellets, do they sink??? My ornate seems to only and I mean only eat off the floor. I very rarely see him come off the floor.
