Bichir eating gravel???

I've put a thin layer of pool filter sand in, tank looks much better, I'll try take a couple of pics once the water has cleared. I'm a bit worried about the fish stiring the sand up as they get bigger, so I'll have to hurry up and switch over to the trickle filter before the canisters get ruined from sucking in sand.
 
I think it's probably hungry and can smell the sent of some long gone food, My Ornate and Senny's often pic bits of gravel up from the feeding area after feeding and theres no food left, always spits it out though, I just feed them until they stop doing this, Give the gravel a clean with a gravel washer to get rid of any nice smells under the substrate. Try some more food.
