Idk if I am the only one who noticed, but some breeds of bichir have eyes that sit on top of the head sticking out which makes them look like frogs, while others have on the sides like regular fish. Unfortunately the internet has not much information on that. I have noticed that the senegal and palmas polli have eyes on the sides while the endli bichirs have eyes sticking out like frogs.

What are your thoughts on the different eye positions and do you have any preference?

It’s from being captive bred (cb). Compared to wild fish there’s a noticeable difference. There head shape, fin shape and tail shape are also different with cb vs wild caught (wc).

I prefer wild caught fish. Less issues related to captive breeding as well.

I see, what kind of head shape does the wild caught vs captive breeding have?

Head shapes can be shorter and more round for cb. Some endlicheri have a heart shape like head when looking from above. More noticeable on the endlicheris for sure. Wild fish will have more narrow and flatter head shapes

Do eye positions also play a part? Cause in some bichirs the eyes are on the side like regular fish, while in other bichirs the eyes are sitting on top of the head like a frog

Are you talking about the difference between lower jaw species versus the upper jaw species?

It depends on the genes of the poly, too much inbreeding of the poly gives them this froggy look in them, short face, bigger eyes and eyes placed on top of the head, WC poly will have their eyes at the side, some CB will still have eyes in the side if it has a good genes.

I did my research and it upper and lower jaw species are indeed what I am talking about. Upper jaw species look like eels or snakes to me, while the lower jaws look like frogs.

For the UJ maybe your talking about rope fish.
To me UJ looks like lizard, and like mentioned above not all LJ look like frog, mostly its the genes in the CB specimen.
