Bichir feeders

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've tried chicken heart, they didn't even look at it. all i've ever feed them were white clouds and ghost shrimp. the occasional night crawler or caterpillar and blood worms also work but they leave a lot uneaten.

My bichir devours bloodworms with an occasional feeder. i've been trying to get him to eat spirulina and brine, but so far he has not even touched it. Im thinking about not feeding for a day or two, and trying again.

I dont get it.
Someone says they are going TO BREED feeders, and 3 people tell em the stores feeders have diseases.

If they are breeding their own, what in the wild world of fruitloops does a stores feeder issues have to do with it?

So you buy two fish, stick em in a tank by themselves. treat em for any parasites diseases, let em breed, and you never buy another feeder again.

Whats the whole contaminated store feeder issue there?

My bichers eat anything I put in the tank. Cichlid pellets, live blackworms, Frozen Blood worms, frozen krill, even frozen vegitable gel and algea tablets for goodness sakes!
I tried rosies and guppies until i found out about LFS feeder issues, and they ate em like cheese sticks in a fat kids lunchbox.

So, I set up a 65 gallon tank just to breed feeder guppies.
I'll switch to platties and then to cichlids (maybe convicts) as they get larger.

If you have a tank set up just to breed feeders, and there are no store bought fish in the tank other than the originals, is there still anything wrong with feeding them live feeders?

All feeders have a chance of being diseased. Only difference between breeded feeders and store feeders is that with breeded, you get to see any early sign of diseases before feeding it to your fishes. Also if you breed using a pair that came from a trusted source, the babies they produce will almost always be disease-free.

Definitely agree with comments about keeping breeders in with the bichirs...not sure that's gonna work out. If I were you, I'd grab a cheap 10 gallon and a pair of convicts. They'll give you what you need -hundreds of fry every few weeks. Having said that, I probably wouldn't mess around with breeders at all for my bichirs (congicus and ornate) because like others have said, they will eat just about anything off of the bottom as soon as the lights go off. They seem to really like shrimp and chunks of fish that I've dethawed. Good luck!

I prefer to stay away from feeders except for an occasional treat. I have mutiple bichirs in a tank. I do not wish them to become to aggresive or injure one another in a feeding frenzy. I have already experiensed a missplaced bitefrom a little frenzy. Also I would take into account the size of the bichir. Size of the tank, etc. To what your feeding them.

Most of my polys don't even touch feeders. I have 2 that do, a senegal and an enlichari-other than that they are all happy to be fed frozen fish(whatever it happens to be) and pellets. I have a palmas that LOVES shrimp pellets- won't touch anything else! Starve them for a day- then 2 then 3, each time introduce the new food type first after the fasting period.

The fish will figure it out soon enough.

BTW I do believe that bichirs do not usually eat live fish in the wild-their too slow- they are either ambush (like my endlichari) or scavengers (the rest of the group).

Bichirs are definately predatory in the wild. They just don't eat a lot of fish. Most of their food is in the form of insect larvae, worms, and amphibians. Gut contents seem to indicate that they mainly eat dragonfly larvae.
I don't feed live food often myself, at least not in the form of fish. Worms, insect larvae, and tadpoles for the majority. Cut of smelt, shrimp and pellets are the main diet though.

I only have 2 bichirs total. one 4 inch senegal, and one 5 inch delhezi. As far as aggression, the worst i have seen is gentle nose bumping. don't have room in my room for another aquarium, no one else in the house is interested in keeping guppies or platties just for my fish to eat. I was also thinking about a pair of rainbow sharks?
