Bichir feeders?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How about no feeders? At least not fish feeders. Fish feeders carry the risk of introducing disease to your tank and your fish. Often it's a "when" and not an "if" situation. Live feeders also increase aggression. If you absolutely must feed your fish something live go for something that doesn't encourage an aggressive animal. You can go with feeder shrimp, but large adult worms are just as good. Sometimes you can cut up bits of shrimp, fillet, etc...and if your bichir isn't picky he might just go for it.

If you really have to go with feeders, do quarrantine them before feeding to your bichir. I like it when my bichirs hunt for feeders, stalking and devour the poor feeder fish... :)

Thanks for the input. I am interested in having an agressive fish thus the purchase of a predator. I also am concerned about disease introduction into my tank which is why I am asking after easy breeders, to breed and feed to it. He eats frozen krill and hikari sinking pellets now. When people mention market shrimp what are refering to?

excuse the typos sent from my Droid Inc2

shrimp in the frozen food section of your local market like humans would eat.

Are you interested in having a fish from the "Aggressive" group or are you trying to train it to be a killer? One is fine, and the other is piss poor fish keeping. Would you train your kid to be a finger biter? Your dog to be a crotch snatcher? Don't train a fish to be a fish killer. It sets you and the fish up for difficulties down the road if you find yourself in a position where you can no longer keep it, or if you want to get tank mates.

As for shrimp, Ghost Shrimp are a really good live feeder that doesn't trigger too much aggression.
