My husband and I are arguing about filtration in my new 75G Tank. I just want to use the canister filter.

He thinks I should use the canister filter, with the biowheel.

Currently filtration in it is
1)Canister
2)Bioweel
3)Sponge rated for a 150G tank.

So it is being way overfiltered but it looks damn good. CRYSTAL clear.

Inhabitants are:
1 Delhezi
3 Sens
6 Mollies

Considering adding 2-3 Angels. Since my husband's are now in a different tank... and I miss them! :(

So what do you all think is good enough filtration? And can you have too much??

The only rule i follow when it comes to filtration is if the fish arn`t being blown around the tank then it`s fine. One of my tanks is 60"x24"x19" and i have an fx5 and an xp3 running on it. The water is like looking through an empty hole with the only grime is any algea that i haven`t cleaned off yet (usually about 8 in the morning)

On my tanks i use an eheim 2217 with an Aqua clear on the other end and a sponge filter just in case of emergency-Anne

I always believe the more the better for the filtration. Since, the water is crystal clear, that is very good. There's never a question "too much?" for me. Also, as you want angels in the tank, those need great water condition.

These fish produce massive bioloads so, a little "over-filtering" is usually called for.

I take it those mollies are intended as future food items? And, forget the angels. Your polys and mollies prefer hard alkaline water while angels prefer soft acidic-to-neutral water.

Why don't you want to use the biowheel moon?

in my 75, I have an FX5, Eheim 2217 and 2 Aquaclear 110.

Inhabitants:

Polypterus - 6" Ornate, 8" Delhezi, 6" Delhezi, 7" ENdli, 7" Buettikoferri, 6" Senegalus
Datnoids - 6 Indo Dats, 1 Thin Bar
Arowana - Leichardti Arowana
Catfish - 7" Tigrinus and 7" Juruense
Misc - 7" Fei Feng, 2 Vampire Plecos

This is a grow out tank...I feed twice a day and do water changes 2 times per week .

I was going to say that sounds like MASSIVE overkill on the filtration...but then I saw your stock list. Probably quite neccessary.

Nope no fish blowing aorund the tank. :O Yeah that way stresses them out.
And yup I keep Mollies, platies and Gups as a food source, and all are in different tanks. :D

Also I've always kept Angels and even with Bichirs they are fine. HUGE, healthy and breeding. So they must not be too upset about the water type and params(which are great anyhow)...lol.

Ok. I will keep it the way it is then. :D

Don't like the Biowheel, only because it leaves a huge gap Bichirs can escape out of and I haven't figured out how to block it up yet. This makes me nervous....lol.

Well you certainly do want to block it up... Would be a shame to do it, but you are best working a way around it and keeping the extra filtration.
