bichir growth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What's the normal size for it's girth for an adult specimen? Most photos I've seen of adults tend to be thicker than the juveniles. Just want to know what I would be expected with my albino senegalus.

hey aquaoahu,

i thought bichirs were illegal in Hawaii?

Like anything if you look hard enough you can find anything. But they are illegal unless the law has been ammended -Anne

Your welcome

LOL its probably not doubled but it can seem like it.Assuming you have a Polypterus senegalus they can have a fantastic growth rate as much as an inch to an inch and a half per month till they reach 7-9 inches then it tends to slow-Anne

my P.Senegalus has hardly grown in the 18mths ive had it, he's only 5.5" an not very fat.......... he eats like a pig but puts on no size???? i dont get it he's in a 55UKG water fine, food fine not over stocked everythin else has shot up......

STRANGE ONE!

There are many deteriming factors in the growth of bichir mainly P.senegalus including quality of food, water temp. water quality and genetics.Extremely slow growth is not that uncommon anymore this could be due to farming and the gene pool which can lead to various genetic problems as slow growth and or stunted growth-Anne

Personaly I start all my bichirs off in a 10 gallon tank then move them to bigger tanks as they grow this allows me to monitor food intake, any possible disease problems and growth rate

yeah feed it a variety of foods. I feed mine frozen blood worms, feeder rosies, and sinking shrimp pellets. When it gets warmer here I'll start to get worms from my decomp pile in the back :D
