bichir in a 55gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the bala sharks alone will get over 12" and need a 6 foot tank. I really wouldn't add anymore until you upgrade your tank.

Definately, I mean, I've kept Bichirs with Plecos before but they only did well because I raised them from about an inch each to full size. Don't risk it, they'll be pestering your Bichirs. I'd even recommend giving away some of your other fish too to make room.

Oh I think you guys would roast me on my 10 gallon housing my 2 endi :ROFL:but no worries they are only 4 and 6 inches and in another few days they will move to the 35 then upwards and onwards to the 180

Hold your horses.....
That's alot of fish for a 55gal. Unless you have 500gph or more i would not add ANY fish....and bichirs generally wont mix with Plecs as they eat slime coats off of Polys

i have 580gph on that tank;)...i also do weekly 50% wc to be extra safe...if the pleco gives me an issue it will go...i have had it with big cats in a staging tank and if it would have eatten slimecoat it would have done it there...but i will still watch it...:D

don't worry about the balas;) i know all about them, and i am counting on them to get well over a foot long...the only reason they are there is the tsns in my other tank...they are still small so it would be fine....i am supprised that no one said anything about the largemouth bass in the tank :naughty: as everything out grows the tank they get a new tank or if i can't i find a good foster home till i have the space....

i may be newer to the site, but this isn't my first rodeo...i have had fish since i was knee high to a grasshopper...i just wasn't sure if a bichir could live comfertably in a 55gal or not....thanx for the concern though...

It's ok everyone seems to like to jump on the bandwagon dogging people keeping a certain amount of fish in their tanks.

The question you posted would probably be limited to the Senegal Bichir, which is the easiest to get, as said. I got one from petsmart at like 3", and in about 3 months it grew to about 8"

IME, the pleco's a bad mix, though i've found ancistrus to do fine...

ya, i figured i would have some bad remarks about stock levels but untill you have x amount of post the respect isn't given out right...ex. if a higher ranking member lists a heavy stocklist it is genus but if a lower member does it it is wrong....but anyways i will get a few senegals and post some pics when i do...
